Relationships between Psychological Factors and Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms in Academic Female High School

Abstract
Background: Premenstrual syndrome(PMS) is a group of psychological and physical symptoms which regularly occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and resolve by the end of menstruation. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the psychological factors and the premenstrual syndrome in academic female high school.

Methods: A convenience sample of 411 girls was recruited from academic high school in three provinces. The data were collected using self reported questionnaires. Collected data was analyzed by using SPSS win 14.0 program with descriptive test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression.

Results: The mean score of premenstrual syndrome symptoms(PMS) was 119.31(range 48 to 227). There was a significant difference in PMS symptoms according to school performance(p=.009), monthly pocket money(p=.003), menstrual amount(p=.011), number of pad per day(p=.011), menstrual pain (p=.000), management if menstrual pain-use of analgesic(p=.005), family history-PMS (p=.000).
The PMS symptoms was positively correlated with stress(r=0.399, p<0.01) and anxiety(r=0.503, p<0.01). The stepwise
multiple regression analysis showed that anxiety, stress, family history, number of pad and school performance
significantly predicted the level of PMS symptoms. These factors accounted for 34.6% of PMS.

Conclusions Therefore, we conclude that in adolescent girls with PMS carefully screened for the psychological factors as like anxiety and stress. It is important to prepare evidence based education programs to control premenstrual syndrome symptoms in high school girls.
